Not too long ago I watched an episode of The Quilt Show that stirred my imagination in a way I hadn’t felt in a while. Could it be because I was exercising at the time (endorphins and all that)? Who knows. I knew about this quilter—had visited her site a time or two. And while I appreciated her creative spark, there was always the thought of “not for me.” For whatever reason, this time was different.
Victoria, you don’t know me, but thank you for being on The Quilt Show. And thank you for 15 minutes of play which, as you’ll see, has become more than 15 minutes. Specifically, I’ve been fiddling with “made fabric” and I am, bit by bit, accumulating blocks.
Blocks in progress
A couple of finished blocks
I’ve lots more “in progress” since this method is a dandy way to make use of scraps. There’s some of everything in these, including batiks and bits of African fabrics. I’m still tossing around ideas in my head about what to do with the finished blocks. They’re interesting no matter which way you turn them, but I’m kind of liking them on point. Then again . . .
I’ve managed to fit in some time on quilting the borders. Progress is slow but getting there. I decided to go with a somewhat freeform leaf/vine motif. The contrast between the thread color and the dark batik isn’t as stark on the actual quilt. (Yes, someday I will replace my camera, or learn to take better pictures with what I have!)
I also received these goodies in the mail recently. Burgundy Buttons was having a sale and I couldn’t resist.

On another note, I read a post on Jaybird Quilts about organization and had to smile. Can I stay organized? Nope. Do I start to get spazzed when things get a little too haphazard and messy? Yup. Is every flat surface clear? Are you kidding?? Although, maybe if I put up more shelves I’d have a better shot at it. And I can relate to things that don’t have a place where they belong. That either says something about the virtues of having fewer things, or a better system for storing said things (it’s pretty much just the fabric I need more room for). Back to the more shelves idea . . .
Not as much sewing going on as I’d like lately. I’ve temporarily put aside the quilting of the Quilt Along project so that I could put together a table topper for a silent auction fund raiser. That one is almost finished and I should be able to post some pictures of it this weekend. I’m really pleased with it so far. I used a courthouse steps block pattern for the center and think I’ll revisit the block design for another project at some point.
My local quilt shop, The Finishing Stitch, had an open house this past weekend. I managed to slip out there for a bit and came home with some treasures, including several yards from the Tidings collection by Benartex.
